The offer
On October 6, Anthropic expanded Claude Startups. Qualifying companies — founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two — got a year of Claude Team for up to five seats plus $1,000 in API credits. The play was straightforward: get young companies building on Claude early, then keep them when the credits run dry.
The timing was not subtle. The expansion landed the same week Anthropic priced Claude Haiku 5.5 at a tenth of the prior generation's input cost. The industry is in an open price war for developer loyalty, and this was Anthropic playing offence.
The flood
Within 48 hours, applications reached 21 times the previous five months' total, Wolf said in an October 8 post on X. Anthropic put the count in the hundreds of thousands.
The approval machinery, evidently built for a trickle, started waving through applicants who were not startups at all. Wolf acknowledged the criteria had not been properly calibrated. Put plainly: the gate was designed for the line Anthropic expected, and then the actual line showed up.
The clawback
On October 9, Anthropic paused the Team and API credit offers and put every application back under review. Companies that had already claimed their benefits keep them. Everyone else — including some that had been approved but had not finished redeeming — goes back into the queue, and some approvals will be revoked.
The Startup Stack and office hours remain available. Anthropic apologized. That was the correct move and not a sufficient one.
The part worth reading twice
Revoking an approval is worse than never granting one. Founders who received a welcome email, told their teams, and then got a second email asking them to reconfirm their details did not experience a pause. They experienced a broken promise, and they will remember it longer than they remember the credits.
Giveaway programs are marketing operations with an approval funnel attached. Anthropic just demonstrated what happens when the funnel fails: the marketing runs in reverse.
What it means if you applied
The distinction that matters now is claimed versus approved. Claimed benefits stay in the account. Approvals without completed redemption return to review. The Startup Stack is untouched.
The broader price war also means cheap Claude access no longer needs a giveaway. Haiku 5.5 runs at $0.10 per million input tokens within a 100K-token context, a tenth of the previous generation's price. The giveaway was never the cheapest route to Claude. It was the most prestigious-sounding one.
