Waters AI Link is an MCP server that exposes supported waters_connect functions to Claude, including Claude Science, and other compatible agents. Waters says those functions cover quantitative acquisition and processing workflows, including sample lists, acquisition methods, instrument assignment, results and reports.
Actions remain subject to waters_connect authentication, permissions and defined tool limits; the agent does not receive unrestricted instrument access. Early access is available now, with general availability planned for November 2026 for waters_connect customers. No price was announced.
Two announcements, one headline number
The larger claim in the same release belongs to the second announcement. Waters has also joined Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard research program, effective immediately. MHS is an open specification, developed by Anthropic with research institutions, intended to let agents operate physical devices such as instruments, liquid handlers and robotic arms.
Waters repeats Anthropic's claim that MHS can reduce proprietary hardware integration from weeks or months to hours or minutes. Waters' announcement does not identify a customer integration, timed before-and-after comparison or list of MHS-enabled Waters instruments supporting that claim. Anthropic has published research demonstrations with other partners — one University of Washington researcher reported connecting six instruments in under a week, including driver development — but those do not establish the claimed integration speed for Waters equipment or for a typical laboratory deployment.
Waters describes overnight, closed-loop experimentation as a capability AI Link and MHS together are intended to enable, not as a generally available Waters deployment. Anthropic has already documented limited MHS research demonstrations — including a Genentech assay involving a liquid handler, robotic arm and plate reader — but those proofs of concept do not establish unattended, end-to-end operation of Waters LC-MS workflows.
Where this could matter in practice
The immediate audience is laboratories already using waters_connect. Waters positions Empower as the compliant system of record when workflows progress into regulated development and quality control. The announcement does not establish how AI-generated methods are validated, approved, documented or reviewed under each laboratory's quality system, so regulated customers should verify those controls before production use.
