Unlike video-AI companies focused primarily on selling model access, Utopai operates a film and television studio alongside its PAI production platform and Utopai X model. It develops its own films and series and builds its production tools inside that work, and now, according to The Information, has raised $60 million in growth equity at a $1 billion valuation to keep doing it. The slate behind the price is more than 20 projects in the works, with three feature films and two series named for 2027 and an aim to screen films in about 3,000 theaters across North America.

That theater number is the clearest statement of intent in the reporting. A release across approximately 3,000 North American theaters would represent wide distribution, but this is Utopai's stated ambition, not a confirmed booking. The company has not disclosed theater agreements or a final distribution schedule. A release on that scale has to sell tickets to people who did not come for the technology. Utopai is asking to be judged as a studio, and a studio is judged on what opens.

The money stops at the studio door

Read the round carefully and it funds the company, not the catalog. CEO Cecilia Shen told The Information that AI tools reduce scene-planning and CGI costs by 80% to 90%, according to Dealroom's summary. She also said the company still pays directors and actors, and raises separate financing for individual projects. The corporate raise does not establish that any individual production is fully financed. According to The Information's reporting, Utopai raises financing for individual productions separately from its corporate funding. The company has not disclosed which projects are fully financed, their budgets or the amounts still to be raised.

The 80% to 90% figure needs the same care. It is a chief executive's statement in a funding story. No project-level cost breakdown, comparison methodology or independently audited production budget accompanies that claim. There is no completed Utopai feature with accounts a reader can check it against, and a percentage saving on planning and CGI is not a percentage saving on a production. Until a budget is public, the number describes a claim about a process, not a measured cost of a finished film.

A tuned MiniMax H3 sits underneath

Utopai does not train a frontier model from scratch. Reporting says it draws on models from several providers and customized the open MiniMax H3 to build its own. The company's own description is more precise: Utopai X is post-trained on MiniMax H3, and in Artificial Analysis results dated September 29, 2026, it ranked No. 2 on the Text-to-Video Leaderboard With Audio at 1,150 Elo, nine points behind the leader and the highest-ranked model from a US-based company. The company's summary of the same analysis placed it first in audio synchronization and physics among the models compared.

The dated Artificial Analysis results provide evidence of competitive performance in short-form video generation, but they do not measure feature-length narrative consistency or commercial film production. The ranking is a snapshot of short clips compared blind in late September. Holding a feature film together is a different test, and it is the one the 2027 slate sets.

The valuation arrived early

One detail in the company's own history should slow the unicorn framing down. A company-circulated release dated September 21, 2026 already described the studio as estimated at $1 billion, attributing the figure to Forbes, and put the slate at 25 projects in development. The Information's count a month later is "more than 20," and the counts may reflect different definitions of a project. The $1 billion figure appeared in company-circulated material before this week's reporting. The new development is The Information's account of a completed $60 million financing at that valuation, a different kind of evidence from the earlier estimate.

Dealroom reports the company already holds term sheets for a follow-on at $2 billion to $3 billion. Term sheets are expressions of interest, not closed money. What would test this valuation is not another term sheet: it is the 2027 slate — which projects secure financing, enter distribution and reach audiences, and at what cost.

Reporting note: Financing, distribution and production-cost details are attributed to The Information's October 23 reporting, with additional detail checked against Dealroom's summary. The complete subscriber-only article was not independently reviewed.
