A record quarter, reported carefully
Start with what is not in dispute. TSMC made more money in the third quarter than in any quarter in its history: NT$763.06 billion of net income on NT$1,494.24 billion of revenue. Both lines beat the numbers the company itself had pointed to. Revenue came in above the $44.6–45.8 billion guidance range, and profit cleared the analyst consensus by roughly NT$17 billion.
TSMC reported its sixth consecutive quarter of record net profit and eleventh straight quarter of year-over-year profit growth. Revenue exceeded its prior guidance, and net income beat the LSEG SmartEstimate by NT$16.76 billion. High-performance computing accounted for 68% of total revenue, up from 66% in Q2, while 2nm rose from 3% to 8% of wafer revenue. Advanced nodes at 7nm and below represented 79% of wafer revenue. AI demand is a major driver of HPC growth, but HPC also includes non-AI processors and other applications; the 68% figure is not an AI-only revenue share.
The two numbers that point the other way
Gross margin fell 1.3 percentage points sequentially to 66.4%, which TSMC attributed primarily to dilution from the initial ramp of its 2nm process. Its Q4 gross-margin guidance of 65–67% does not promise a return to Q2's 67.7%. Meanwhile, CEO C.C. Wei described planning for 2027 as prudent, citing rising component costs and macroeconomic uncertainty affecting consumer and price-sensitive markets. That caution came alongside a raised 2026 revenue forecast and continued statements that AI-related demand exceeds available capacity. The company has not reported an AI-demand slowdown, but the comments should not be reduced to mere expectation management.
Why TSMC Shares Fell Before the Earnings Beat
TSMC's Taipei-listed shares closed approximately 2% lower before the earnings announcement, amid a broader regional technology selloff that also saw Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix decline more than 10%. The decline therefore cannot be described as a reaction to TSMC's reported earnings. Higher-than-expected US inflation and concerns about AI infrastructure financing were part of the wider market backdrop, but the day's share move cannot be attributed to any single factor. TSMC's results provide evidence of strong current semiconductor demand; they do not settle investors' broader concerns about financing costs and AI infrastructure returns.
