Two versions of the same lost season

There is no dispute about the outcome. A completed edit of a prime-time reality season is gone, the editing work behind it has to be redone, and a premiere scheduled for 22 November will now happen sometime in 2027. The dispute is over a single word: agent.

The outcome is established: the completed edit was lost and the premiere moved to 2027. The cause remains disputed. Aftonbladet's unnamed sources say an AI agent with access to Mastiff's servers deleted the material; TV4 explicitly denies that an AI agent was responsible and describes a technical failure. Neither account has been accompanied by publicly available system logs or a detailed incident report establishing the deletion mechanism.

TV4's denial is explicit and on the record. Press officer Ludvig Ternstedt told SVT that the autonomous-agent explanation was incorrect, and answered no when asked whether any type of AI agent was involved. Programme executive Mia Lindqvist identified the failed backup as the major problem and confirmed that the original footage remains. Mastiff, the production company whose servers are at the centre of the allegation, declined to comment through its CEO and referred inquiries to TV4. TV4's own news site initially carried the agent allegation in a headline; the broadcaster's later reporting and its spokespersons' statements reject that explanation, and it is the later, explicit account that holds.

The backup is the confirmed failure

The confirmed recovery failure is the backup. TV4 says the completed edit disappeared and the backup did not provide another usable copy, although the raw footage survived. That makes the incident a warning about recoverability regardless of the deletion mechanism. The reporting does not establish which account, person or software process had deletion rights, whether the backup shared the same permissions, or whether an automated system was involved. Those details matter before assigning responsibility for the loss.

That is also the part of the story that generalises. A finished season is exactly the asset a backup system exists to protect, and raw footage surviving is the reason this is a delay rather than a cancellation. But footage is not the product. The product is the edit: the story structure, the cuts, the accumulated decisions that turn location footage from Gotland into broadcast episodes. That layer is what now has to be rebuilt.

What to watch

The unanswered questions are technical: what deleted or corrupted the edited project, which systems or users had relevant permissions, why the backup could not restore it, and whether any AI agent was involved. A detailed incident timeline, Mastiff's account or independently examined logs could clarify the sequence. Until then, the supported story is the postponed season, lost edit and failed recovery — not a confirmed autonomous-agent failure.
