The app store is the new leaderboard

We covered Vidu Q4 Preview yesterday as a pricing story: five videos for the price of one, with an asterisk. Today's story is the second half of that equation. Shengshu can sell generation cheap; that only matters if someone puts the model in front of people who would never open a developer console. Perfect Corp, a beauty-tech company best known for virtual makeup try-on, just did exactly that, and it did it “within days” of the model's release.

This is the distribution layer of the AI video race working as intended. The models improve every few months, and the winners get decided by who ships them into consumer software first. Artificial Analysis can rank Vidu Q4 Preview against H3 Max and Gemini Omni Flash all day; the ranking that matters for Shengshu's business is how many YouCam users tap “generate” on a travel photo. The press release leans into this: a travel photo becomes waves rolling in, a finished makeup look becomes a slow camera move for social media, a product photo becomes a short ad for a small business.

Read what it doesn't say

The press release is specific about specs — 4K, 10-bit colour, 24fps, 3 to 16 seconds — and silent on the two numbers that determine whether anyone uses this more than once: which YouCam tier unlocks Vidu Q4 Preview, and what a generation costs. Perfect Corp already runs a multi-model lineup in these apps, so Vidu Q4 is joining a menu, not replacing one. The “4K” maximum is a ceiling, not a promise of what the free or base tier delivers.

The 10-bit colour claim deserves a note too. Ten-bit video carries about a billion colours against 8-bit's 16.7 million, which genuinely matters for skin tones and gradients. But most phone screens and social platforms will downconvert it on delivery, so the benefit mostly accrues to people exporting original files — exactly the pro-adjacent users the marketing photos show, not the average selfie editor.

None of that makes the integration uninteresting. It makes it a useful test case: a Chinese video model, days old, dropped into a Taiwanese company's NYSE-listed consumer apps. The velocity of model distribution is the story. The billing page is the footnote we'll be reading next.

The practical angle

If you make short social content — product demos, portfolio shots, before-and-after beauty work — the honest comparison now is not Vidu Q4 Preview versus Kling or Hailuo in a vacuum. It is Vidu Q4 Preview inside an app you already have versus those models behind a separate subscription and a separate workflow. The barrier to trying AI video keeps falling because the models keep moving closer to where the photos already live.

Watch the tiering when it appears. If Perfect Corp gates Vidu Q4 behind its higher subscription or prices generations aggressively, that tells you what the company thinks the model's marginal cost is. If it ships broadly, that tells you the model economics are finally cheap enough to be a feature instead of a product.
