The part where you read the footnotes

First: “starts answering” is not “finishes answering.” The 44% figure measures when the first words appear, and it comes from OpenAI's own evaluation. It is a latency number with a marketing wrapper.

Second: OpenAI is not first to this idea. Google shipped a similar interactive-answers feature to Gemini in May with its Neural Expressive rollout. What OpenAI has is distribution. The company's own claim of 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users means a second-place feature can still become the default way a billion people expect answers to look. Being early and being standard are different prizes.

Third, and most telling: the rollout splits the fleet. Paying customers get GPT-6 Sol. Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna, the lighter sibling in the same family that debuted in September at a fraction of the cost. OpenAI's own September materials positioned Luna as the cheaper, faster model; today's release applies that economy-tier logic to a billion free users. The answer you get will soon depend on which tier you pay for, not just how good the underlying model is.

What this changes, practically

For free users, the visible change lands tomorrow: ChatGPT will look and behave differently, and the model behind it will be Luna, tuned for everyday conversation. For paid users, the change is here today. For enterprise admins, availability depends on workplace settings, so expect a settings email.

The longer question is what a chatbot that builds interfaces does to the apps those interfaces replace. OpenAI says the goal is software that adapts to people instead of people adapting to software. The other reading is that every interactive answer is a potential new surface for everything else ChatGPT has been testing this quarter, including the ads it started putting in image-generation waits earlier this month. An answer that builds a bill-splitter is useful. An answer that builds a bill-splitter with a sponsored placement is a business model.
