The free tier isn't disappearing. It's getting narrower.
Google has published a notice telling Gemini users that the model menu in its apps is being cut down by subscription tier. The new lineup takes effect October 9, and it reads like a quiet price increase for anyone who built habits around the better models.
The new menu
After the change, the app shows a smaller set of keys to each tier. Personal accounts without a Google AI subscription keep Flash-Lite and lose Flash and Pro. AI Plus subscribers at $9.99 a month keep Flash-Lite and Flash, but Pro disappears from their plan. Only AI Pro ($19.99) and AI Ultra keep the full set.
There is a wrinkle worth noticing. October 9 is the start date for users with no subscription. AI Plus subscribers don't share that date — Google says each will receive an email with their own effective date. So the menu doesn't flip for everyone on the same day; it narrows on a rolling schedule Google controls.
The quiet detail
For an AI Plus subscriber who relies on Pro, the math is simple. The plan that included Pro is now effectively the $19.99 tier, which is $10 a month more at published US prices. Google hasn't raised the sticker price on AI Plus. It has shrunk what the sticker buys.
This is the part that should annoy anyone who settled into a workflow. A free or lower-priced plan can become a different product after you've built around it, without the name or the price changing at all.
What it isn't
The notice covers Gemini Apps used with personal accounts. It says nothing about the Gemini API or AI Studio, so this isn't the end of free Flash everywhere, whatever a rushed headline claims. The developer side has its own pricing and its own entitlements, untouched by this announcement.
That's also why the announcement matters beyond its scope. Google is learning the subscription playbook the way airlines learned seat classes: keep the familiar name, shrink the seat you're entitled to. Before October 9, it's worth checking which row you're actually sitting in.
