The agent comes to you

Most assistants wait to be asked. Duet reverses the direction. The product Anthropic is selling is not a better answer but a triage decision: what needs you, what can wait, and when to check first. The morning brief is the visible part. The less visible part is the cadence underneath it. Duet checks connected accounts every few hours, not continuously, and Anthropic gives the reason plainly: checking nonstop would consume plan limits much faster. The work itself runs on a cloud virtual machine with its own browser, so tasks continue while a laptop or phone is off. The browser runs remotely, though, and Anthropic says users cannot yet view Duet's browser session, which limits direct visibility into how it completes web tasks.

The task range in the launch post is deliberately ordinary. Scheduling meetings sits at one end; building dashboards, financial or sales forecasts, prototypes and web apps sits at the other. The small-business examples Stripe chose to highlight are more specific, and more telling: chasing unpaid invoices in QuickBooks, preparing payroll in Gusto, issuing a refund without leaving the app. This is a bid for the work that fills a day without filling a job description. 9to5Mac framed the launch as Anthropic taking on OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse; that is a competitor framing from coverage, not Anthropic's own wording. The comparison places Duet within a growing category of proactive assistants, though the products differ in access, autonomy and integrations.

The meter runs while you are away

"Included in your plan" appears early in Anthropic's post. The condition appears near the end, under the research preview heading, and it changes what included means. Duet shares your plan's usage limits with the rest of Claude. Its background checks count toward those limits. A financial model or a deck costs more turns than a brief. Anthropic's own conclusion is that you may reach your limits sooner than with chat alone.

That is not a hidden clause. Anthropic states it openly, and the honesty is worth noting. It is still the number a subscriber should plan around, because Duet's costs are not tied to prompts you remember typing. An agent that wakes up every few hours to look at your inbox spends allowance while you are doing something else, including on days when it finds nothing worth messaging you about. Whether that trade is good depends on a figure Anthropic does not publish: how much of a Pro or Max allowance a typical day of background checking consumes. Until users can see that burn rate in practice, the waitlist is also a metering experiment, run on subscribers.

The approval design is the strongest part of the launch. Duet prepares; the human commits. Sending, paying, signing and deleting all wait for a yes, and two categories, trading securities and moving money between accounts, are refused even with a yes. One scope caution: that confirmation flow is what Anthropic describes for purchases and those gated actions. Stripe's companion post says its MCP server also lets Duet users send invoices and payment links, manage products and prices, analyse revenue and issue refunds inside the app, and neither post establishes that every one of those administrative actions sits under the same per-purchase confirmation. The new sensitive-information classifier draws a similar line in the other direction: Anthropic says the strictest tier of information cannot be shared, and the next tier moves only on an explicit instruction. Those boundaries are stated as product behaviour in a launch post, not as guarantees in a contract, and the post itself concedes the system "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." Read the gates as a design intent that early users are being asked to test, because that is what a research preview is.
