The announcement is three facts and a silence

Cat Wu's farewell post is generous and specific about the work. She thanked the Claude Code, Cowork and Tag teams, credited users with shaping much of what shipped, and described helping build Claude Code into an industry-defining product as the journey of a lifetime. In a March 2026 account published by Anthropic, Wu described joining the company in August 2024 to connect researchers with customers, picking up an internal Claude Code prototype that autumn, and eventually leading product for the tool as it moved from answering questions and writing tests to running large migrations under an auto-approve default.

What the post does not contain is any of the three things a departure like this usually carries. There is no reason. There is no destination. And Anthropic, which confirmed she has gone, has named no successor. Her only comment on what comes next was a joke in a reply: "post agi!"

A departure at an awkward time

A single product manager leaving a company of several thousand is normally personnel news, and personnel news is usually noise. Two details lift this out of that category. The first is timing: the departure lands weeks before Anthropic's expected initial public offering. Claude Code is one of the company's most visible products, and losing its product lead at this stage raises a reasonable question about who takes responsibility for its next phase. Claude Code is not a side project. It has become one of Anthropic's most visible developer products and an important part of its competition in AI-assisted software development. Wu was closely associated with its launch, appearing alongside creator Boris Cherny in the February 2025 research-preview demonstration.

The second detail is repetition. Thariq Shihipar, another member of the Claude Code team, announced his departure last month. The team's senior pair has also briefly left before. Business Insider, citing The Information, reported that Wu and Cherny departed for coding startup Cursor in summer 2025 before returning to Anthropic roughly two weeks later. None of that establishes a problem inside Anthropic, and readers should not let a headline assemble one from two confirmed departures. It does establish that two people associated with Claude Code have announced departures within a relatively short period, at the point when the product is becoming an increasingly important part of Anthropic's public-company story.

What to watch, and what not to conclude

Cherny remains, and nothing in Wu's post or Anthropic's confirmation suggests a change to the product itself, its roadmap or its pricing. Users evaluating Claude Code should not treat a product lead's exit as a signal about the tool's quality today. The questions worth watching are narrower: whether Anthropic names a successor or folds the role into someone else's, whether other named members of the original team follow, and whether Wu surfaces at a competitor, as she briefly did in 2025. Until one of those happens, this is a gap at the top of an important product, disclosed cleanly and explained not at all.
