Three devices, three software states
Apple's home launch is really one product sold three ways: a screen for the counter, a speaker for the room and a box for the television, each presented as a way into Siri AI. What a buyer actually gets on day one depends on which box they choose.
HomeView, the new device in the range, gets Siri AI in beta from launch. The Apple TV 4K gets Siri AI as a beta in tvOS 27.2, with support also extending to second-generation and later Apple TV 4K models. That weakens the case for upgrading solely to access Siri AI, although the new hardware adds hands-free microphones and other capabilities. HomePod mini 2, the cheapest way in, gets a promise: Siri AI in a future software update, in English, in eight listed markets including Canada, with no date attached. TechCrunch noted that Bloomberg had reported Apple wanted these home devices out in 2024, and that delays to the AI-powered Siri pushed the hardware back with it. Two years later, the hardware has arrived first anyway.
The footnotes carry the conditions
Apple's own releases are where the practical limits sit. Personal-context Siri AI requests on HomePod mini 2 require the home's owner to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, powered on and configured in a supported language. HomeView also requires a paired compatible iPhone or iPad for personal-context requests, although its broader Siri AI capabilities work without one. Features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, and Apple says expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in the future. None of that is in the headline price.
Geography is a harder limit. Siri AI will not be available in the EU in iOS or iPadOS at first, and HomeView is not being sold in the EU at all, with Apple saying it is working with the EU on a way forward and giving no timeline. A product whose core feature cannot legally ship in a market of 450 million people is not a finished global launch, whatever the preorder page says.
The prices moved more than the remotes did
Set the AI aside and the hardware changes are genuine: an S10 chip and a music-reactive light top on the speaker; an A19, far-field microphones and a findable remote on the Apple TV; a proper display, face recognition for up to six people and a nine-camera view on HomeView. But the prices deserve the same scrutiny as the features.
At US entry-level list prices, Apple TV 4K rose from $129 at the start of 2026 to $199 after a reported June increase and $299 for the new model — a $170 increase, or about 132%, within the year, for a streaming box in a category where rivals have also raised prices but still start far lower. The HomePod mini launched at $99 in 2020, went to $129 earlier this year and is now $149. HomeView's $299 is for either the tabletop or the separately sold wall-mounted model, and the wall-mounted version needs a mount that starts at $59.95 and runs to $129.95 for the PoE version due in early 2027. A full setup using one HomeView, four HomePod mini 2 speakers and the new Apple TV 4K would cost $1,194 at US list prices before taxes, mounts or other accessories. That total is worth stating plainly, because Apple presented the pieces separately.
What to do with this launch
Existing Apple TV owners have the easiest decision: the Siri AI beta comes to recent boxes in software, so the $299 model is a hardware upgrade and should be judged as one. HomePod mini 2 is a reasonable buy as a speaker. As an AI purchase it is a preorder for software with no date. HomeView is the most interesting device and the biggest leap of faith: a new category, sold on a beta assistant, unavailable in the EU.
AI features are now used across the industry to justify hardware price rises, while the features ship in beta, behind a paired-phone requirement, or not yet. Apple's version is better documented than most: it printed its own limits in its own footnotes. Reading them before ordering is the whole job.
Dated note (13 October 2026): all prices are U.S. list prices as announced on 13 October 2026. Availability is 30 October 2026 for HomePod mini 2 and 13 November 2026 for HomeView and Apple TV 4K. Siri AI status (beta on HomeView and Apple TV, future update on HomePod mini 2) is as stated at announcement; if Apple dates or ships the HomePod update, add a dated update here rather than editing the text above.
