The numbers Anthropic would not show anyone last week are now out, one room later. At its investor day in San Francisco on Wednesday, the company told prospective investors that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up 45% from $11.6 billion in the second quarter and $4.7 billion in the first, according to two attendees who spoke to Reuters. The Financial Times first reported the figure. Anthropic also told the group it was profitable in the quarter, on an adjusted basis. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
One quarter, $16.8 billion, is more than three and a half times Anthropic's revenue for all of 2025. That is the scale of the claim, and it deserves the first line. The rest of this piece is about the two qualifiers attached to it.
Growth, read in two directions
The 45% headline is a quarter-on-quarter growth rate, and it is much slower than the rate that produced it.
Using the quarterly figures reported by Reuters, revenue grew approximately 147% from Q1 to Q2 and 45% from Q2 to Q3. The dollar increase also slowed, from $6.9 billion to $5.2 billion. Annualizing Q3 gives $67.2 billion. Reaching a $110 billion annualized exit rate through Q4 revenue would require approximately $27.5 billion in Q4, a 64% sequential increase and a $10.7 billion quarterly gain — more than twice Q3's dollar increase. At a hypothetical $2 trillion equity valuation, that represents roughly 30 times annualized Q3 revenue or 18 times the unachieved year-end run rate.
Calculation note: Growth rates use Reuters' reported Q1 revenue of $4.7 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported a different Q1 figure, so the Q1-to-Q2 comparison should be revisited when Anthropic releases financial statements.
A company adding five billion dollars of revenue in a single quarter is not in trouble. But the trajectory investors are being asked to price is a curve that is already bending, and the next data point they were given bends it back up by assumption. That expectation, stated by an attendee, is not a reported result.
The word doing the work is "adjusted"
Anthropic reportedly told prospective investors it achieved adjusted profitability in Q3. Bloomberg additionally reports positive free cash flow, an adjusted gross margin of 85% and an adjusted operating margin above 11%. Those figures suggest improving operating economics, but the reporting does not disclose the adjustments, accounting definitions or full reconciliation to GAAP results. Earlier Reuters reporting described a 2025 operating loss above $8 billion excluding specified writedowns, alongside at least $518 billion in long-term infrastructure commitments. Those figures provide context, not a direct like-for-like comparison with one quarter's adjusted profit or cash flow. A public filing should make the definitions and obligations easier to assess.
A softer pitch in the room
Reuters' attendee account describes Amodei emphasizing AI safety without the extinction-risk language associated with some of Anthropic's earlier warnings. Executives also discussed using Anthropic's own models internally, including in chip-design work, while attendees received 'thinking' hats. These details illustrate the investor-facing presentation, but they do not independently establish a change in Anthropic's safety policies, technical capabilities or financial outlook.
The practical angle
For enterprise AI buyers, the reported figures indicate rapid expansion in Anthropic's business, but do not by themselves predict lower model prices, higher service availability or improved contract terms. For investors, the next checks are revenue recognition, adjusted-profit reconciliations, cash-flow definitions and the timing of infrastructure commitments. These October 14 figures come from accounts of a private presentation, not a public earnings release; update the article when Anthropic publishes comparable financial disclosures.
