A second services venture, on a second continent
The pattern is becoming a template, if the reporting is right. Anthropic's US services venture with Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman was announced as a joint venture in May 2026 and launched under the name Ode with Anthropic in July. The Wall Street Journal reported at the announcement that the venture was valued at $1.5 billion, a figure that included $300 million commitments from each of Anthropic, Blackstone and Hellman & Friedman. OpenAI announced its own Deployment Company the same week in May, a partnership led by TPG with Advent, Bain Capital and Brookfield as co-lead founding partners. The European version, as the FT describes it, follows the same design: the lab supplies the models and the engineers, a private equity firm supplies capital and a portfolio of companies that can become the first customers.
What the FT reporting adds is the structure, not the scale. Anthropic would pay from its own balance sheet rather than through a fund. According to the FT reporting, Hg plans to invest through managed funds, including the listed HgCapital Trust. The amount, investment vehicle and resulting ownership interests have not been disclosed. The two hubs, London and Berlin, and the year-end launch target are the only operational details on offer, and neither company has confirmed any of them on the record.
The portfolio is the pipeline
Hg is not a neutral co-investor. It owns software and services companies across Europe, and the reported plan has the new firm working across that portfolio as well as for outside clients. The reporting names the shape of that market rather than a client list: software companies selling to businesses, and white-collar groups more broadly. The relationship is not new. Hg's own announcement in September 2026 dates its work with Anthropic to early 2024 and describes joint hackathons, staff enablement and embedded deployment work across the portfolio. According to the FT reporting, Hg has around 150 AI specialists of its own across its holdings, and one person cited by the FT said the new consultancy would operate alongside, rather than replace, that team. On that account, the venture reads less like a startup and more like a permanent sales channel with engineers attached.
That channel is the competitive point. Accenture and the Big Four firms have built large practices reselling and implementing the same models, Claude included. A consultancy backed by Anthropic could benefit from closer product knowledge and access to the model provider, and would compete for the same budgets. But the reporting does not specify its technical-support arrangements or whether it will recommend competing models, and a buyer who needs vendor-neutral advice cannot tell from anything published so far whether this firm would give it.
Everything that would price this deal is missing
Set the European report beside the Ode announcement and the gap is the story. Ode arrived with a reported valuation and named commitments from its founding partners. The Hg venture arrives with none of its numbers: no amount from Anthropic, no amount from Hg, no ownership split, no name for the company, no chief executive, no pricing for clients. The sourcing is people familiar with the matter, and the reports carry no on-the-record statement from either side. HgCapital Trust, the listed vehicle named in the reporting, had made no regulatory announcement about the venture as of 23 October.
The timing explains some of the urgency, and it is reported rather than hidden. The FT has reported that Anthropic is seeking new revenue to support heavy data-centre spending ahead of a planned listing, and that its revenue growth slowed in the third quarter. A consultancy could provide services revenue alongside model and API sales, potentially with a different capital profile from building and operating frontier-model infrastructure. But a reader asked to judge whether this venture matters commercially has, today, no European number to work with at all. Until the firm discloses its capital or signs a named client, it is a structure in search of a scale.
