Anthropic has crossed an important line in enterprise AI: Claude is no longer only a chatbot that can fetch a Google file. It now sits beside the file and changes it. The new public beta puts a Claude sidebar in Docs, Sheets and Slides, while separate connectors let a user start in Claude, create or open a Google file, and edit it beside the conversation.

That sounds like a productivity feature. Strategically, it is a distribution fight. Google owns Workspace and already gives Gemini the native seat. Anthropic is trying to prove that model preference can beat product default.

The document is becoming the interface

In Docs, Claude can rewrite passages and restyle headings without forcing users through a copy-and-paste loop. In Sheets, it can write formulas, build pivot tables and charts, add tabs, and use Python for heavier cleaning or joins before writing results back. In Slides, it can create pages from the deck's existing layouts and check for overlaps, overflow and hard-to-read text.

The important change is not that another assistant can generate text. It is that Claude can operate on the durable object where the work already lives. A draft, model or deck is more valuable than the chat that produced it because colleagues review it, version history records it and the organization keeps using it after the conversation ends.

Anthropic has built both entry points. Open the file first and Claude appears in the sidebar. Start in Claude and a linked Google file can open beside the chat. That two-way path matters because the winning assistant will not force workers to remember which window owns the task.

Approval is the product, not a safety footnote

The beta defaults to “Ask before edits,” which presents changes for review. Users can switch to “Accept all edits” for ordinary work. Some actions still stop for a security review, and the add-on cannot share a file, transfer ownership or create scheduled automations.

That boundary is commercially useful. An AI editor has to be capable enough to save time and constrained enough that an IT administrator can allow it. Anthropic is selling both qualities at once: direct manipulation for the worker, visible approvals and existing enterprise controls for the buyer.

The constraints are also a reminder that this is a beta. Claude cannot handle Docs comments, Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery, or fully editable Slides charts; one operation stops after six minutes. Chat history for the sidebar is stored locally per file and does not sync across devices. This is a serious integration, not yet a complete replacement for the native tools around it.

Gemini owns the default

Google's advantage is not merely model quality. Gemini is built into Workspace, can draw context from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web, and does not need a separate Marketplace install or another vendor review. Claude arrives as a chosen add-on. That means Anthropic has to win twice: an employee must prefer it, and an administrator must permit it.

Anthropic's counter is breadth. Claude already works directly inside Microsoft's Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Adding Google's suite makes Claude a cross-platform work layer rather than an assistant tied to one productivity vendor. For companies that use both Microsoft 365 and Workspace, consistency across files may matter more than whichever assistant has the home-field advantage in one app.

There is a second twist: Microsoft uses Anthropic models in parts of its own agentic Office work. Anthropic can therefore be a model supplier inside one rival's product and an application competitor inside another's. The model market and the software market are separating; winning one no longer guarantees control of the other.

The price of a second AI seat

Claude for Google Workspace is included with paid Claude plans; Pro starts at US$20 a month when billed monthly. Gemini may already be bundled into an organization's Workspace plan. The feature comparison can be close while the procurement question remains simple: is Claude enough better at the work this team does to justify another subscription, another app approval and another set of controls?

That is the real test of this launch. Anthropic has removed the friction of moving work between Claude and Google files. It has not removed Google's distribution advantage. Claude now has a desk inside Google's office, but Gemini still owns the building directory.
